Mike graduated from Santa Clara University (Philosophy/Psychology) and then joined VISTA, where he taught guitar and English in inner-city Salt Lake City. He worked for the Salvation Army, setting up the first residential treatment program for adolescent substance abusers in Salt Lake City. He later converted the Salvation Army Rescue Mission into an inpatient alcohol rehab program.

He completed his MSW from the University of Utah and then returned to California to work for the next five years as the clinical director of the Santa Cruz County Methadone/Heroin Detox Program. He also worked for the county as a forensic social worker in the jail and criminal justice system.

In the 80’s, Mike changed direction and became involved in setting up, and working as the medical social worker, in a home health care agency in Santa Cruz County. For the past 24 years, Mike has consulted in skilled nursing centers throughout Northern California.

He co-authored Psychosocial Interventions in Long Term Care: An Advanced Guide (Hayworth Press, NY), which is the text for his advanced workshops for social services designees. Mike makes his home in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
